BERLIN — A slime trail led German customs officials to a bag filled with giant snails.
According to The Associated Press, German customs officials found a stash of 100 giant African land snails and other hidden items at the Duesseldorf Airport earlier this month.
The AP said that authorities released a statement Friday that said the customs officials stumbled over one of the snails on a baggage truck and thought it was a toy at first until it started moving. Then, the officials noticed an 8-inch trail that the snail left that led them to a bag with a hole. The bag had another snail peeping out of it.
Customs officials located about six bags of around 93 giant snails, 62 pounds of fish and smoked meat, plus a suitcase full of rotting meat, according to the AP. Everything was imported from Nigeria and was heading to a store for African goods located in Germany.
According to the AP, an animal rescue service in Duesseldorf took the snails. Custom officials in their statement, according to the AP, said that the meat was destroyed.
No further information has been released.
