According to WPRI and WJAR, the Providence attraction announced Monday that southern tamanduas Carina and Salvador welcomed a pup on May 6.

“Welcome to the world, baby tamandua!” the zoo captioned Instagram photos of the new arrival.

Officials said the pup, who has not been named, “continues to bond with mom behind-the-scenes as the zoo’s animal care staff and veterinary team continue to monitor them, performing daily wellness checks to ensure healthy development,” the post continued.

Southern tamanduas, aka lesser anteaters, are native to South America, the zoo wrote in the Instagram post. The animals, which are arboreal relatives of anteaters, “use their sharp claws and prehensile tails to climb trees and grip branches,” the post read.
