Tennessee paramedic accused of stealing drugs from ambulance

SUMNER COUNTY, Tenn. — A Tennessee paramedic is accused of stealing drugs from a county ambulance, authorities said.

Travis Alan Stenberg, who works in Sumner County as a licensed paramedic, was charged with one count of official misconduct, three counts of theft of property ($1,000 or less), four counts of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud, one count of obtaining legend drug by fraud and one count of reckless endangerment, according to Tara Wyllie, Sumner County’s assistant district attorney.

According to a federal indictment, Stenberg took multiple drugs, including fentanyl, morphine and ketamine, for about two months last year, WKRN-TV reported.

Court documents state that Stenberg opened locked narcotics boxes in a Sumner County ambulance, removed the drugs from their vials and replaced them with saline solution, WZTV reported.

Those vials were then put back into the narcotics box, the television station reported.

“We’re not talking about a large amount of money, but we are talking about a position of public trust,” Wyllie told WKRN. “That’s why we have the official misconduct charge. So, we’re talking about somebody that was in a position to protect these things and instead took them for their own use.”

Stenberg’s attorney declined to comment, WZTV reported. Stenberg will appear in court on May 26.
