Warrant issued in fatal shooting of Memphis rapper Young Dolph

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Tennessee authorities have issued a warrant for a man wanted in connection with November’s fatal shooting of Memphis rapper Young Dolph.

A first-degree murder warrant was issued for Justin Johnson, 23, in the Nov. 17 shooting of Young Dolph, 36, whose real name is Adolph Robert Thornton Jr., WHBQ-TV reported.

The rapper was visiting Makeda’s Butter Cookies, a bakery in South Memphis, to buy cookies, according to WHBQ. The shop’s owner, Maurice Hill said two men drove up to the store, exited a white Mercedes-Benz, and fatally shot the rapper.

According to a news release from the U.S. Marshals Service, the agency and the Memphis Police Department have been searching for suspects. A $15,000 reward has been offered for information leading to an arrest, according to The Associated Press.

Johnson has been added to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s “Most Wanted” list, WHBQ reported.

Young Dolph released his debut album “King of Memphis” in 2016. His second album, “Rich Slave,” was released in 2020 and peaked at No. 4 on Billboard’s Top 200 chart. He was well known around the Memphis area, where he handed out turkeys for Thanksgiving through the Memphis Athletic Ministries charity, spoke to schoolchildren and donated money to his former high school, WHBQ reported.
