MARTINSBURG, W. Va. — A West Virginia trooper was shot Friday after a standoff with a suspect who had barricaded himself inside a home, investigators said.
West Virginia State Police said the trooper, Cpl. Z.S. Conner, was wearing a ballistic vest when he was shot inside the home in Martinsburg, WDVM reported. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation and later released.
State police and the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office were searching for Russel Payne, 43, a suspect in a murder case when they found him barricaded in the home. Authorities entered the home after hearing gunfire and found the suspect dead.
An autopsy report will be performed to determine the cause of death.
