LAS VEGAS — A woman was arrested and charged with child abuse after a teenage boy was run over and crushed while skateboarding last year in Las Vegas.
Anais Hernandez, 36, was arrested on March 30 for child abuse in connection to the death of a 15-year-old boy on May 30, 2022, according to KVVU.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said Hernandez was asked by Anthony De La Torre, 15, if he could hang onto her car while he was skateboarding. She refused but let the boy’s aunt, Destiny Jimenez, 19, drive the car, according to the news outlet. Del La Torre was pulled under the car and was crushed. He was taken to the hospital where he died four days later.
“Hernandez told the juvenile that his suggestion was not wise or safe and that she was unwilling to operate the vehicle,” detectives wrote in the arrest report obtained by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Jimenez was sentenced to three years of probation in January for reckless driving, the newspaper reported. She reportedly told police that she was drinking and smoking marijuana prior to the crash.
In a warrant that was signed in November, detectives reportedly said that Hernandez should have stayed behind the wheel, according to the Review-Journal. She was the oldest adult and put the juvenile in danger.
“Hernandez’s actions on May 13, 2022, contributed to the death of the juvenile,” police said, according to the newspaper. She is facing child abuse or neglect and conspiracy to commit child abuse charges.
Hernandez’s next hearing is expected on July 18, according to KVVU.
The relationship between the woman and the teenage boy is not clear.
