A new iteration of the “Peter Pan” series will feature Yara Shahidi as Tinkerbell.
The 20-year-old actress announced via Instagram that she would take on the part of the little green fairy.
“Peter Pan and Wendy” doesn’t have a release date yet, but another big name is already attached to the forthcoming film.
According to Variety, Jude Law has been cast as Captain Hook. Alexander Molony will portray Peter Pan and newcomer Ever Anderson will bring Wendy to the big screen.
Shahidi is the first Black woman to step into the role. The announcement comes a little more than a year after Disney announced Halle Bailey of sister-singing duo Chloe x Halle was cast as the first Black woman to portray Ariel in a live-action version of “The Little Mermaid."
While filming for the live-action “Little Mermaid” began at the beginning of this year, production was paused due to the coronavirus pandemic, and a release date has not yet been announced.
Shahidi is most known for her role as Zoey Johnson on the sitcom “Black-ish” and its spin-off series “Grown-ish,” which also features Bailey. Shahidi has also appeared in Disney’s “Wizards of Waverly Place” and “Scandal” by award-winning writer-producer Shonda Rhimes, as well as a number of other films and TV shows.
