Unabomber Personal Items Auctioned Off

ATLANTA,None — A diploma, a hatchet and a hooded sweatshirt all belonging to the Unabomber are being auctioned off starting Wednesday morning.

A judge ordered personal items belonging to Ted Kaczynski to be sold on the Internet. Proceeds will go to benefit the victims of a series of bombings that killed three and injured nearly two dozen others.

Items on the auction block belonging to the domestic terrorist include diplomas from Harvard University and the University of Michigan, a series of tools, a manual typewriter, arrows, a scale and even a series of driver's licenses.

A U.S. Marshals Service photo website showed dozens of written materials and photos belonging to Kaczynski, as well as sunglasses, shoes, backpacks and a gray hooded sweatshirt made famous by a forensic sketch issued by the FBI.

Channel 2's Carol Sbarge got to see some of the items in person at the Peachtree Summit Federal Building in Atlanta. Lead FBI agents in the Unabomber case were at building to talk about their experiences on the Kaczynski case.

Not included in the auction are evidence determined by the government to be used for bomb making, and other writings that contained instructions for assembling explosives.

Kaczynski was captured in 1996 at a cabin in Montana after a series of bombings that started on the campus of Northwestern University in 1978. He is serving a life sentence at a federal prison in Colorado.

U.S. District Judge Garland Burrell of the Eastern District of California ordered the sale of the items in August 2010. Kaczynski was also ordered to pay $15 million in restitution.

The auction is being held on the General Services Administration website at www.gsaacutions.gov.
