Jake Scott, a University of Georgia Hall of Famer who helped the Miami Dolphins to the only perfect season in NFL history, died Thursday. He was 75.
The Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson reports that Scott had been in the hospital in Atlanta for a week following a fall and head injury. UGA confirmed Scott’s death Thursday night.
Scott played safety at Georgia during the 1967 and 1968 seasons, where he led the team interceptions both seasons. His 440 yards on 35 returns and 10 interceptions in 1968 both set school records.
Scott led UGA to the 1967 Liberty Bowl and the 1968 SEC Championship, which landed the Dawgs an invitation to the Sugar Bowl.
He left the university to play professionally in the Canadian Football League before the Miami Dolphins selected him in the 1970 NFL Draft with the No. 7 pick.
Scott played in three Super Bowls with the Dolphins and earned Super Bowl VII MVP with his pair of interceptions to seal the win. The 1972 Dolphins are still to this day the only team to go undefeated in the regular season and win the Super Bowl.
It’s another loss for the 1972 team. Legendary head coach Don Shula died in May.
