Mets’ Cespedes opts out of season after not reporting for Braves game

Hours after the team said he didn’t report for Sunday’s game against Braves, the New York Mets have announced that Yoenis Cespedes is opting out of the season.

General manager Brodie Van Wagenen gave an update following the Mets’ loss to the Braves. Van Wagenen said he supports players’ decisions to opt out, but this was surprising.

Shortly before first-pitch, the Mets released a statement saying that Cespedes never showed up to Truist Park and they were unable to reach him.

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Newsday’s Tim Healey reported the Mets had “no reason to believe Yoenis’ safety is at risk” at this time.

Van Wagenen said the Mets sent security to Cespedes’ room and found it empty with his belongings gone. The Mets said his agent informed them mid-game that he was opting out.
