ATLANTA — Newly acquired catcher Sean Murphy has agreed to a six-year, $73 million contract extension with the Atlanta Braves, the team announced on Tuesday.
The contract will keep Murphy under team control until 2029, when he will have a $15 million player option for that season, which would make the overall contract valued at $88 million over seven years.
The team acquired Murphy, 28, early this month in a three-team trade with the Milwaukee Brewers and Oakland Athletics, sending out backup catcher Manny Pina back to Oakland, along with left-handed pitching prospect Kyle Muller and right-hander Freddy Tarnok.
According to the team, Murphy has agreed to donate 1% of his annual salary to the Atlanta Braves Foundation.
General Manager Alex Anthopoulos has helped the organization lock up a core of young players to long-term commitments. Murphy is the latest player to make a long-term commitment to stay in Atlanta, joining former A’s teammate Matt Olson, Austin Riley, Ronald Acuna Jr., Ozzie Albies, Spencer Strider and Michael Harris as players who are signed at least through 2027.
Despite this core of talent tied to the team, the Braves did lose former starting shortstop Dansby Swanson this offseason. Swanson signed a seven-year, $177 million deal with the Chicago Cubs.
