Trae Young starting All-Star Game, competing in 3-point contest

CHICAGO — Some of the NBA’s best talent will converge at the United Center in Chicago for the 2020 NBA All-Star weekend. Count Atlanta Hawks point guard Trae Young among them.

Young is set to have a busy weekend as he will compete in a different event each night. Here’s when you can watch Young prove why he is an NBA All-Star.

Friday: Rising Stars

Luka Doncic vs. Trae Young. Their careers have gone hand in hand going back to the night they were drafted in 2018. Young was traded by the Dallas Mavericks to the Hawks for the rights to Doncic.

The two will go head-to-head again Friday night in the Rising Stars . The game starts at 9 p.m. following the NBA All-Star Celebrity Game.

The format for Risings Star game pits U.S players vs. World players. Young and Doncic competed at this event last year. Young will be joined by metro Atlanta native Collin Sexton on the U.S. roster:

Saturday: 3-point shooting contest

This will be Young’s first appearance in the 3-point contest, which has changed some of its rules this year.

Going in the All-Star break, Young has made 173 of 469 attempts for 36.9 percent from behind the arc. He ranks No. 6 in total 3-pointers made so far this season.

Young will compete against Washington’s Davis Bertans, Phoenix’s Devin Booker, Charlotte’s Devonte Graham, Sacramento’s Buddy Hield, Chicago’s Zach LaVine, Miami’s Duncan Robinson and last year’s winner Joe Harris.

The 3-point shooting contest will take place Saturday night at 9 p.m. along with the skills challenge and dunk contest.

Sunday: 69th NBA All-Star Game

Young wasn’t alive the last time the Atlanta Hawks had a player started in the All-Star Game.

Dikeme Mutombo earned a starting spot in the 1998 All-Star Game. Young was born later that year.

Young will start Sunday night with Boston’s Kemba Walker, Toronto’s Pascal Siakam, Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid and Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo.

“This has been a dream of mine since I was a kid, since my grandpa was alive, watching the All-Star game with him,” Young said of the announcement last month.

Young finished first in fan voting among the guards with 2,829,969 votes. Antetokounmpo earned the most fan votes, so he will be the Eastern Conference captain.
