Falcons, Atlanta United allowing limited number of fans at games in October

ATLANTA — The Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United announced Tuesday that a limited number of fans will be allowed to attend games starting in October.

Team and Mercedes-Benz Stadium officials said they made the decision based on several factors and a decline in COVID-19 cases in the state. Officials are in contact with local health officials to monitor any changes.

Tuesday’s announcement did not include how many fans would be allowed at the stadium.

The Falcons said in July that they hoped to have a seating capacity of 10,000 to 20,000 for its first four home games. The team eventually decided to not have fans for September games.

“We are thrilled to invite fans of both the Falcons and Atlanta United back to Mercedes-Benz Stadium,” CEO Steve Cannon said. “Having fans watch from alternative locations was a difficult, but important decision. It’s been challenging for both teams to play without fans, but their well-being as well as the safety of our associates and fans was paramount.”

The first game Falcons fans can attend is Oct. 11 against Carolina Panthers. Atlanta United’s home games for the rest of the season included Oct. 24 against D.C. United and Nov. 1 FC Cincinnati.

The Falcons said they will host 500 friends, friends and employees for Sunday’s game against Chicago to test out protocols and figure out any issues that come up.

More information will be sent to season ticket holders and fans in the next week about what to expect at the games. The NFL does have a mandatory mask policy in effect for all 32 teams.
