EF-1 tornado touched down in Clayton County during Monday’s storms

ATLANTA — Severe storms that moved through Atlanta Monday downed trees, killing one man and leaving homes damaged and powers out for some.

Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brad Nitz says a brief EF-1 tornado touched down in Clayton County based on preliminary reports.

Nitz says it was on the ground for about 1 minute with a 3/4 mile track with peak winds estimated 90 mph.

Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brian Monahan said that heavy rain with the chance of an isolated storm and 40-50 mph wind gusts moved through Atlanta Monday morning. Storms have moved out, but showers will continue through the afternoon. Temperatures are also falling today.

Channel 2′s Tom Jones is in Riverdale where the storms brought down trees and limbs on top of a few homes. At least one man was killed when a tree fell on him.

Smyrna Police reported that storms knocked out power to parts of the city Monday morning. Crews were out working to get power back on. In Cobb County, a tree fell taking down power lines on Cheatham Hill Road.

A Channel 2 Action News viewer reported damage to homes around Bethsaida and Lake Forest Drive in South Fulton County.
