ATLANTA — Tropical Storm Ida has formed in the Caribbean and has the potential to become a significant hurricane in the Gulf.

Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brian Monahan said everyone in the southeast needs to monitor the storm closely, though the pattern right now favors higher alert along the central Gulf Coast.
On Thursday night, the storm was packing winds of more than 40 mph as it formed west of Jamaica.
