Winter storm: The snow is over, but ice is now the main concern

ATLANTA — “The snow is over.” That is the word from Severe Weather Team Chief Meteorologist Brad Nitz, but we are not out of the woods yet with this winter storm.

“We’re now starting to transition to more of an ice threat,” Nitz said.

Nitz said that the snow that is high up in the air is melting as it falls and then refreezing before it hits the ground.

“In particular, the northern and northeastern metro is already starting to see pretty significant icing up to about 1/10 of an inch, and that’s going to increase in the hours ahead,” Nitz said.

Nitz said parts of Gwinnett and Hall counties along I-85 and I-985 will likely see some of the worst ice accumulations.

The Timing of the ice:

The freezing rain will start to dissipate throughout the evening, but as the sun goes down, so will the temperatures.

“After 8 p.m., and certainly after 11 p.m., all of the more widespread precipitation moves out and we’ll dry out overnight and into the morning,” Nitz said.

Nitz said much of North Georgia will see hours of temperatures below freezing.

“Everything that is slushy and wet out there now is going to freeze,” Nitz said.

Nitz anticipates things getting icy throughout the night and into the morning hours.

Ice Amounts:

Most of the southwest metro will see about 1/10th of an inch of ice.

The northeastern part of the metro could see up to 1/4 of an inch of ice in parts. Between Lawrenceville, Gainesville and Athens, people could see up to 1/2 inch of ice.

“The spots that get up to 1/2 an inch of ice, do not drive. Just as simple as that,” Nitz said.

Nitz said that area will likely see downed trees and branches, widespread power outages, and dangerous driving conditions.

What to expect on Saturday:

Moving into Saturday afternoon there will be some breaks in the clouds and temperatures will rise above freezing for several hours. Gwinnett
